Journal entry #5- Hard News vs. Soft News

Ovechkin's latest assist: Giving a coat to a man on the street in Edmonton

This article is definitely soft news in a way, because it is not a world issue or anything that hits us hard. It is a nice feel good story about a famous hockey player giving a coat to a cold homeless man. This story makes his fans love him even more, and shows that he is not another rich athlete who does nothing to give back. This article is a human interest story and pulls at our heart strings. This story does present the basic information, like a hard news story would. It does not contain enough characteristics of a hard news story to be considered a hard news story. This story is based on the headline of the article. The quotes in the article are about the topic, and are from the player himself. Some quotes are also from people who do street outreach programs for homeless people. This story in my opinion has enough characteristics of a hard news story to be considered in the middle, because it mentions the amount of homelessness in Edmonton. This story is a blurred news story.

Astros outslug Dodgers in wild Game 5

This article is definitely a soft news story. It only tells about this years World Series, and is solely about baseball. As a sports fan I personally understand how attached fans get to their teams, and they are even more attached during the playoffs. This article pulls at the heart strings of fans from both teams, making some people extremely happy and others extremely upset. This article has all the aspects of a soft news article. The article does not really have much to do with any serious damage, and is not part of a tragedy or government issue. It is only about a sport that people watch for entertainment purposes. The article does have some quotes from players, but it is just explaining how they felt during the game. This article is definitely a soft news article.

Ex-Trump campaign manager Manafort, business partner plead not guilty to conspiracy and fraud charges

This article is a hard news article because it is about an important political manner. One of Trumps former campaign managers has been accused of fraud and conspiracy charges against the United States. He has been accused of laundering money and giving out valuable information. Also, he is accused of making millions of dollars by working with Ukrainian political leaders. This is definitely hard news as it has been reported on a lot of late. It is about a very huge topic in politics right now, and if he is found guilty he could get into some serious trouble. Lieing to your government and giving classified information to another country is an extremely huge deal, and will not be taken lightly.
