Journal Entry #8- Facing Fake News

The photograph posted along with the Fukashima Nuclear Disaster article leads to many questions. One thought that I automatically had when I saw the picture was " Where is the proof that this picture was actually taken in Fukashima, near the power plants ground?" There is absolutely no actual proof to show that this picture was taken there. The closest thing to proof is that the article says this picture is taken there. Articles have risen and are questioning whether this photo was taken where it was said to be, and whether it was the radiation that even caused these mutations. Some scientists have said that the radiation levels are barely above normal levels where this photo was believed to be taken, and that it is believed to be safe for living things to stay in that area. Also, others have said that they've seen these mutations in flowers without any radiation needing to be present, so it might not even be caused by the nuclear disaster that took place. For me to act

Journal Entry #7- WikiLeaks and Whistleblowers

Canada passes law to protect whistleblowers and journalists’ confidential sources There is finally a new law that will help protect journalists against search warrants and police surveillance. Whistle blowers will no longer be allowed to be punished in Canada for their articles and what they post or write about anymore. This law is a very good thing for journalism because most of the journalists who may have been afraid to "Whistle Blow" i the past because of possible legal issues can now tell the information people deserve to know without having to worry about their own safety. The only way that a police authority can get a search warrant is if they ask a judge and the judge decides that the warrant should be handed out and that the importance of the investigation outweighs protecting a source. This article and new law that came out in 2016 relates to the documentary we watched last week on WikiLeaks and Whistle blowing. This new law is a good thing because anonymous sou

Journal Entry #6- If You Cant't Do The Time, Don't Do The Crime

I usually do not think very much about if what I am reading is true or not. The only time I think an article may not be true, or at least partly false is when it is to fake to believe. Now that I am thinking about it though, I am really curious about how many articles I read may contain fake facts. Journalists probably lie all the time to get a story finished on time, or to make a story more interesting. After all, a journalist will do anything to get an extra view or two. In my opinion I believe that I can trust any big name websites to be telling real news. I trust CTV, Vice and Sports Illustrated to name a few. After reading these articles I am very surprised. I believe that the people who wrote these false lies should be punished and never allowed to work in journalism again. In both cases they told obscured lies to make a huge story out of something that shouldn't have been a big deal. Both cases are completely ridiculous and these people should be ashamed of themselves for

Journal entry #5- Hard News vs. Soft News

Ovechkin's latest assist: Giving a coat to a man on the street in Edmonton This article is definitely soft news in a way, because it is not a world issue or anything that hits us hard. It is a nice feel good story about a famous hockey player giving a coat to a cold homeless man. This story makes his fans love him even more, and shows that he is not another rich athlete who does nothing to give back. This article is a human interest story and pulls at our heart strings. This story does present the basic information, like a hard news story would. It does not contain enough characteristics of a hard news story to be considered a hard news story. This story is based on the headline of the article. The quotes in the article are about the topic, and are from the player himself. Some quotes are also from people who do street outreach programs for homeless people. This story in my opinion has enough characteristics of a hard news story to be considered in the middle, because it menti

Journal entry#4- What Is Newsworthy

Somalia truck bombing toll over 300 as funerals begin Timing- 4/4 I gave it a 4 on timing because this article was posted this morning and is the latest update on the Somalia truck bombing. The bombing happened Saturday, but this article updates about the number of injuries and causalities, so it is important. Significance-4/4 I gave this article a 4 on significance because over 300 people died in this bombing. It is the deadliest single attack in the country's history. It has grabbed the attention of people worldwide. Proximity-2/4 The proximity of Somalia to Canada is not close at all, that is why I gave this article a 2 on Proximity. We can relate in a way though because of the terrible shooting that happened in Las Vegas recently. Prominence-2/4 This story has prominence because of the number of deaths involved in the bombing. These people were not very well known, and we still do not really hear about many of their names. I gave it a 2 because it is not very prom

Journal entry #3- Writing The News Articles

Massive Fire Affects Small Town Celebrity      On the night of October 10th a fire changed a family's life  forever. This was not just any family, it was the house of hockey prodigy Danielle Richie.      The town of Black Vegas is extremely angered by the events that have taken place. Nobody from Black Vegas is surprised that Bertha Halls started the fire. Towns people say she would've had no reason to start the fire, except to start trouble.      We asked towns people about Bertha to see why they expect her as the fire starter. " Bertha has always started trouble, even as a young grade 1 student she was stealing other kids books, and pulling the other girls hair", said Jimmy Way; her first grade teacher.      We still wanted more information about Bertha, and if she would actually do something like this, so we asked her mother; Ricky Halls. " Bertha has always been a disobedient trouble maker, and is not very re

Journal Entry #2-Starting with the basics

Article #1-This article is about a Toronto Blue jays player Jose Bautista. It tells us about his possible last home game as a blue jay, and his former accomplishments as well. The game took place on the night of September. 24, 2017. The game took place in Toronto at the Rogers Center. This might be his last game because of his age and the amo unt of money he wants to come back, he is not exactly worth what he wants anymore, and it is expected th e team and him will not be able to come to a mutual agreement. The fans sent him off with a standing ovation. The lead was effective, it told his game stats and drew in the attention of the reader to continue reading. It also pulled at fans hearts when it says it may have been his final home game in a blue jays uniform. The most important and interesting  news was to
