Journal Entry Reflection Entry #1 – First Newspapers
Newspapers have changed a lot since the first newspaper was published. Now a days the news papers have multiple pages along with many colorful pictures and games. The first newspapers were very short and for the most part had no pictures at all on them. The new papers are on nice paper, while the old ones were on rough paper.
The first newspapers were almost nothing like today's newspapers. The first newspapers were not very appealing, and it wasn't really the news that people wanted to know about. The first newspapers really had no freedom, and did not post very interesting information. Most of the first newspapers were shut down, or told what they were allowed to post about. The main focus of early newspapers was to just plainly state facts, while today's have opinion pieces, as well as sports and comic sections.
The early newspapers that we read about came out over 300 years ago, at this time the government would shut down any newspaper that would say anything bad about them. The governments had all the say and could ban a paper for speaking bad about them, so most paper at the time never said anything bad about the government. Today's newspapers are very different, as they will say whatever they think will sell papers, if a journalist comes along a story that makes the government look bad they still post it. This would not have happened years ago, but in our world today governments do not shut down papers for this.
The government today sometimes will speak out about a newspaper or something a newspaper says and tell us that their remarks are fake or that we should not listen to them, but they do not shut down papers. I believe this is because if they did shut down papers in today's world people would find out that they did, and it would just make them look worse and raise more questions. If the government did that today, people would think they are trying to hide something from us by not letting us be told about it. I think it is a good thing that governments do not do this anymore, because even-though some newspapers don't tell the truth, we should be able to decide for ourselves what we listen to, and not be told by our governments!
The first Canadian newspaper being published in Halifax is kind of a shock to me, but kind of is not at the same time. I expected that the first Canadian paper would have been published in a larger city such as Toronto, or someplace in the province of Ontario. When I think about it though I do realize that Nova Scotia was one of the important provinces at this time, so it does make some sense that it was published here. This first paper must have ended up being somewhat successful, because look at our country now, it is full of newspapers!
